How should I install DAZ 3D content into Poser 7?

PLEASE NOTE:
This article is kept for archival purposes.  It shows how to install content using the older 'Bitrock' or legacy content installers for use with Poser 7.  It recommends installation into the Program Files folder.  At the time this article was made, most users had Windows XP.  This is no longer recommended for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.  It is also not recommended for MacOS.  Since this article the default install path for content should be in the user's document folder.

In fact, new users are recommended to download and use Install Manager, a free application provided by DAZ 3D to streamline the download and installation of content files.  To download and see help information for Install Manager, go to this page: http://www.daz3d.com/install-manager-info/

The destination directory needs to be the Poser application folder itself. At no time, should you ever direct a DAZ3D installer to the folder called 'Runtime' or 'Downloads.'

"c:\Program Files\E Frontier\Poser 7"

You should also make sure you consult the 'readme' that is available at the end of the installation and also in your 'readme' folder inside of the Poser 7 application folder. The readme will tell you where to load the new content from within your Poser content Library.

Installing DAZ 3D Content into PoserPro 2010

DAZ 3D provides content as self-extracting installers with license agreements.  The current format at the time of this article is the Bit Rock format.  Previous formats include various versions of VISE installers.

This article explains how to install DAZ 3D content into Poser for use in Poser. Screen shots reference Bit Rock installers.  Earlier installers look different but have similar options.

The content installer when used correctly will place all the files in their correct hierarchy into the runtime for use in Poser's Library Panel.

Users with further questions about how Poser handles and displays content are encouraged to contact Smith Micro  for Poser support.

The Target folder is Never 'Runtime'
The DAZ 3D content installer requires the user to select a target folder.  A common error made by new users of DAZ 3D content is to target the 'runtime' folder.  In the Poser content hierarchy, the 'runtime' folder is the very top folder.  In DAZ Studio, the 'content' folder is the top of the hierarchy.  Since DAZ 3D content installers are designed to accommodate both Poser and DAZ Studio, the target folder is the folder holding the runtime folder (or whatever you designate as your 'runtime' folder.)

For example, if you wish to install content to the following runtime folder:

c:\Program Files\Smith Micro\PoserPro2010\runtime
MacHD:Applications:Smith Micro\PoserPro2010\runtime

Then this is the correct target folder:

c:\Program Files\Smith Micro\PoserPro2010
MacHD:Applications:Smith Micro\PoserPro2010

In this example below, the user is installing into Poser 7 on the Mac.  Notice that 'Poser 7' is the last folder in the path.

Targeting the Folder with DAZ 3D Content Installers
The executable file for Poser has changed through its versions.  For this reason, the content installer won't recognize later versions of Poser.  Here's how to get around this.

Choose "DAZ Studio" as the target application.  Don't worry. We haven't forgotten you're using Poser.

On the next screen, choose to "Specify" the path.

On the next screen, use the browse button.  Browse to and select the correct target folder.  The previous section explains which target folder to use.

You're not using the 'runtime' folder as the target folder, are you?  That won't work with DAZ 3D content.

Adding the RUNTIME to your Library in Poser
Starting with Poser 8 and higher, the default 'runtime' folder no longer automatically appears in your Library Panel.  If you've installed content to show up in the runtime folder as shown above, you'll need to add the runtime folder to the Library Panel.
